From October 24 - 26 2017, the Agency on Statistics of the Republic of Tajikistan hosted the 12th meeting of the Working Group on Statistics within the framework of SPECA
This meeting is organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) by the invitation of the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.
This meeting was attended by the representatives of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Mr. Vale Steven and Ms. Catherine Chatelain, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Mr. Michael Biddington, the European Free Trade Association - Mr. Taube Volker and Ms. Rebecca Gentile, Bureau of Statistics of Norway - Mr. Utne Harald, as well as the State Statistics Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Central Statistical Organization of Afghanistan, the Committee on Statistics of the Ministry of the National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Statistical Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The meeting was opened with an opening remark by the Director of the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Ms. Gulnora Hasanzoda who noted that the UN Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia was established in 1998 to strengthen intra-regional cooperation in Central Asia and its integration into the world economy and thanked for the regular activities of the SPECA working group on statistics, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the European Free Trade Association and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
Ms. Gulnora Hasanzoda also noted that the UN countries members at the end of 2015 assumed new obligations in Paris with the agenda until 2030 - the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. At the same time, at the end of 2016 the Republic of Tajikistan adopted two strategic documents on the country s development: the National Development Strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan until 2030 and the Medium-Term Development Program of the Republic of Tajikistan until 2020.
The international practice of monitoring the implementation of the previous declaration of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has proved that the national statistical services of the UN member countries played a vital important role in this context.
Based on the adopted declaration, the development partners, in particular the UN regional units in the region make common efforts to improve coordination and improve the statistical recording and tracking of the SDG indicators.
It is also necessary to take into account the capacity and capabilities of national statistical services, since monitoring the SDG indicators requires additional resources and time.
The following issues were discussed during the meeting within 3 days: Progress in the development of indicators for sustainable development; administrative data for statistical purposes and priorities for future work.
In the course of this meeting, countries exchanged experience on preparation to monitoring SDG indicators since many of the indicators are available from various sources.
At the end of the meeting, the participants expressed special gratitude to the Agency on Statistics for the high organization of this meeting.
